Job Description Summary

Responsible for the development and supervision of Athletic Department and SDC event student workers, part-time and temporary employees, and volunteers. Plan, coordinate, and oversee all aspects of facility and game management for all athletic events and special events held in the SDC, MacInnes Ice Arena, Gates Tennis Center, trail system, Sherman Field, and other surrounding outdoor venues. Responsible for planning game operations and staffing for off-sight athletic and recreation events. Monitor building equipment rentals, athletic and special events, safety, security, customer service, and enforcement policies and procedures for all facilities. Ensure that programs and activities within the Athletics & Recreation Department are consistent with the mission and goals of the University and contribute to enrich the quality of life for all student-athletes, students, faculty, staff, and external customers. Main areas of responsibility include all athletic, recreation, student affairs, university and community events held in our facilities or in conjunction with the Athletic & Recreation Department.

Responsible for the athletic equipment operation and staffing. Update and enforce Equipment Room policies and procedures to ensure efficient use of resources, order all equipment requested by coaches and staff, research equipment in need, coordinate and oversee the delivery and receiving of equipment from vendors, organize and oversee the distribution and collection of equipment before and after every sport season, develop and enhance contracts and relationships with vendors, determine the equipment needs for all programs while submitting a balanced budget for each sport, ensure the proper and safe fitting of equipment for student-athletes, maintain student-athlete issue and billing records, maintain a detailed equipment inventory, report and maintain equipment as needed, assign athletic team lockers and oversee organization and maintenance of athletic locker rooms and equipment rooms. Schedule, recruit, train, and supervise all student team mangers and student employees. Oversee all laundry operations for the building.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

1. Assist the assistant athletic director for facilities and operations in the planning, coordinating, and directing daily operations, athletic, recreation, and special events.
2. Effectively hire, train, motivate, supervise, develop, evaluate, and establish staffing schedules for part-time and temporary employees and student workers to meet established standards for all athletic and recreation facilities and areas.
3. Ensure that consistent, high quality customer service is provided to all students, staff, and external customers.
4. Conduct frequent inspection of assigned areas and staff performance to assure that all work is being carried out in a proper and orderly manner.
5. Formulate, enforce, and recommend policies and procedures governing the operation of the facility or function and see that all are adhered to.
6. Assist the general public, students, and departments on campus with information concerning all operating facilities and activities.
7. Accountable for the operation of all units in the SDC, during evening and weekend hours concerning staff, security, and safety.
8. Evaluate and improve customer service and satisfaction through continual interfacing with customers.
9. Plan, coordinate, and oversee all pre-event set ups and post-event tear down, field maintenance and painting.
10. Act or designate individual as event/game manager for all athletic and special events conducted at the SDC and all athletic and recreational facilities.
11. Hire, train, and schedule all support staff including game operations, ushers, ticket takers, and hosts for all athletic and special events.
12. Hire, train, and schedule all support staff for laundry operations.
13. Assist in conducting WCHA, GLIAC, and NCAA post-season championship events.
14. Participate in strategic decision making for all facility operations and attend departmental operations and planning meetings.
15. Assist with emergency plans, evacuations, and response teams in mock and actual disasters.
16. Promote, evaluate, and improve services, facilities, and equipment for student-athletes, coaches, students, staff, faculty, and external customers.
17. Provide information concerning Athletics & Recreation facilities, programs, services, equipment, policies, and procedures.
18. Resolve complaints and facilitate problem solving and satisfaction through continual interfacing with all customers.
19. Promote the operational schedule and preparation for all facilities for events to generate revenue and provide service to students, staff, and external customers.
20. Work as a member of the athletic and recreation leadership team to develop and implement appropriate marketing and promotional initiatives to maximize visibility and attendance of University varsity games, and other events/activities.
21. Ensure all NCAA compliance is followed for athletic events.
22. Address all complaints and ensure that University guidelines are adhered.
23. Embrace high ethical and moral standards of behavior.
24. Attend all home games and act as the game administrator as required.
25. Manage all aspects of the equipment budgets for all 14 varsity athletic programs.
26. Direct, manage, implement, and develop ongoing policies and procedures for all equipment related decisions with emphasis on risk management and safety of all student-athletes.
27. Direct, organize and manage all equipment purchasing.
28. Direct, recruit, train, evaluate, and supervise all equipment and laundry room staff.
29. Attend regional and national conference meetings annually.
30. Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.
31. Apply safety related knowledge, skills and practices to everyday work.

Required Education (minimum requirements)

Bachelor’s degree in sport and fitness management, athletic, facility management, business management, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

• Demonstrated experience working with the general public and customers in an athletic environment.
• Demonstrated experience working with personal computers including a working knowledge of databases and spreadsheets.
• Demonstrated ability and evidence of commitment to work with a diverse group of student, staff and community members.
• Demonstrated ability and willingness to work evening and weekend hours.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

• 2 years working in an athletic department or athletic event management position.
AEMA certification
CEFMA certification
• Master degree in Business or Sport Administration
