Job Description Summary

The director position plays a crucial role in Michigan Tech’s Information Technology department by guiding the operations of Media Technology Services (MTS). The Director supports the University in leveraging technologies to enhance learning, facilitate research, and advance strategic initiatives through the application of media technology. MTS accomplishes its mission by promoting collaboration and innovation among faculty, students, and University stakeholders. This involves designing, developing, and effectively utilizing learning environments and multimedia technologies. The range of media technology systems encompasses rich media-enabled classrooms, immersive environments, enterprise digital signage, web conferencing, videoconferencing, and various eLearning and blended learning technologies. Furthermore, MTS provides engineering support for all video and audio systems within the Athletic department.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

• Develop and manage Michigan Tech’s blended learning technology strategy, web conferencing systems, and campus-wide digital signage initiatives.
• Provide strategic leadership, motivation, and coaching to staff and students.
• Direct and coordinate the research, piloting and assessment of teaching and learning technologies with the Center for Teaching and Learning.
• Establish and maintain relationships and strategic partnerships with key vendors.
• Manage large technical projects including planning, budgeting, and personnel direction.
• This position requires the incumbent to develop the skills of professional IT staff, stay abreast of developments of media technology systems, active learning pedagogies, and maintain current knowledge of industry trends.
• Hire professional staff and students.
• Assess effectiveness of safety measures and training and implement necessary changes. Anticipate and recognize problems and potential problems at the individual and system levels.
• Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.
• Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

• Bachelor’s degree in information technology, audio engineering, networking and system administration or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

• 3 years technical experience and 5 years in an enterprise leadership role (can be concurrent)
• Experience managing professional staff in a technologically complex environment.
• Experience managing multiple projects and resource allocation simultaneously

Desirable Education and/or Experience

• Experience reading construction documents and working with architects and designers on construction projects

• Demonstrated experience with blended learning technology systems in an operational environment.
• Demonstrated strong analytical reasoning skills.
• Demonstrated desire to continue learning new and applicable technologies.
• Demonstrated ability to diagnose technical problems and apply standard solutions.
• Demonstrated ability to develop vendor relations to pilot technology solutions.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff.
• Demonstrated commitment to a culture of safety by having established safety as a key professional value and essential component of daily practice.
• Extensive experience with Crestron, QSY Control Hardware and Software, or equivalent

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

• Experience with NDI and IP video systems.
• Experience with video production systems such as VMIX and video replay systems.
• Experience with the fundamentals of networking and the implications of network security in respect to A/V systems.
• Experience with design and deployment of large venue sound systems including the programming of the audio DSPs and UI
• Demonstrated success in, or potential future contributions to, working with persons from diverse backgrounds, creating a sense of belonging, and fostering a fair, objective, welcoming place to work for persons with a wide variety of personal characteristics and viewpoints.
