Job Description Summary

Under the direction of the Maintenance Manager; the Electrician shall troubleshoot, maintain and install high voltage and low voltage electrical and control systems.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

1. Follow all university safety policies and procedures while performing duties.
2. Contribute to a safe working environment by actively participating in safety training and development of safe work procedures.
3. Maintain a broad knowledge of electrical trade practices, techniques, and applicable codes.
4. Troubleshoot, Maintain and Install complex wiring circuits and electrical equipment.
5. Work on high voltage circuits and equipment, up to 15,000 volts.
6. Maintain high voltage sub-station equipment.
7. Read and work from wiring diagrams, schematic drawings, and technical manuals.
8. Properly use electrical measurement and testing devices.
9. Ensure installations and repairs are in compliance with applicable codes and specifications.
10. Work from a general assignment and proceed with minimum supervision or direction from others.
11. Coordinate project schedules, material orders, and installation with the requesting department representative and facilities management supervision.
12. Coordinate the efforts of other trades in projects involving multiple trades.
13. Prepare cost estimates, layout sketches, material selection, schedules, and reports for various projects as assigned.
14. Perform tasks and provide assistance requiring general knowledge of other trade skills.
15. Assists FM Purchasing in the upkeep of inventory parts for essential systems.
16. Responsible for cleanliness, sanitation, and safety in assigned area.
17. Assist in basic electrical and safety training programs.
18. Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.

Required Education (minimum requirements)

• High school diploma and trade school diploma, or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.
• Possess and retain a Journeyman Electrical License.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

• Four years of experience working as a Journeyman Electrician in an industrial or institutional environment.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

• Two years of experience working with high voltage electrical distribution equipment up to 15,000 Volts.
• Possess and retain a Masters Electrician License.
• Two year Electrical Engineering Technology degree.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

• Demonstrated knowledge of standard practices, codes, regulations, safety standards and theory applicable to Electrical systems.
• Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot, maintain and install high voltage and low voltage electrical and control systems.
• Demonstrated ability to safely work with high voltage circuits and equipment up to 15 KV.
• Possess valid driver’s license.
• Demonstrated ability to give and follow instructions.
• Demonstrated ability to perform manual tasks associated with electrical work such as climbing, lifting, and handling of electrical equipment and supplies.
• Demonstrated ability to read blueprints, wiring diagrams, temperature control diagrams, operating and maintenance instructions, plans and manuals.
• Demonstrated competency in using personal computers to access web sites, load and operate software, use word processors and spreadsheets and manage files and directories.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff.
• Ability and availability to work flexible hours, overtime, evenings, nights and weekends when required to handle emergencies or work backlogs.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

• Extensive knowledge programming and troubleshooting Variable Frequency Drives
• Knowledge of Building Energy Management system control components and software including fume hood control systems.
• Advanced Competency in using personal computers and software packages for CAD, word processing and spreadsheets.
• Familiar with RS 232/485 communication protocol.
• Familiar with internet protocol and IP addressing.

Work Environment and/or Physical Demands:

• The work environment characteristics and physical demands described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
• Employee may be required to work near energized electrical equipment.
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, sense heat or feel objects, tools, keyboards and controls; stand; talk and hear; and taste and smell. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance on stairs, ladders and work platforms; kneel, crouch or crawl.
• The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close, distance, peripheral, and color vision; depth perception; and the ability to adjust focus.
• The employee must be able to control hand movements required while using tools and equipment for this trade.
• The work environment is that of a typical industrial fabrication shop or equipment room setting.
• The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. Hearing protection may be required.

Required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):
• Hearing protection, safety glasses, hard hat, work gloves, insulated and FR clothing and other PPE as prescribed by specific safety assessments for various tasks.
