Job Description Summary

As a member of the Information Technology team, this position will have substantial responsibility for the design of network systems and network programming in the following areas: determine hardware, software, or system functional specifications; the design, development, documentation, analysis, creation, testing, or modification of network infrastructure systems or programs. This position works in conjunction with technical staff and IT leadership to propose and set enterprise wide technology architecture direction. This position will define architecture road maps, standards, and processes which align closely with IT and University strategy and provide the most effective combination of business fit, strategic and innovative evolution of technology as well as business risk solutions. This position will operate with a vision and perspective of technology evolution that is 3 – 5 years out.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

1. Work in a team environment to deliver communication and network services to all University constituents.
2. Lead in the design, procurement, installation, configuration, testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting of the University’s network infrastructure and communication systems.
3. Participate in long-range planning for network optimization.
4. Identify, analyze, troubleshoot issues to identify impact, root cause and action plans.
5. Document systems, solutions, processes, and procedures for a variety of network and communication services.
6. Keep current with new technologies through external working groups, conferences, and other educational opportunities.
7. Integrate safety practices into daily activities.
8. Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.

Required Education (minimum requirements)

• Bachelor’s degree in telecommunications engineering, network engineering, electrical engineering, electrical engineering technology, electronics, computer network and system administration, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

• Four or more years of professional TCP/IP internetworking design experience.
• Experience analyzing and using structured problem solving as well as available tools to troubleshoot systems, identify root cause, action plans, impact and resolution options.
• Experience with an extensive knowledge of routing, switching, and associated protocols.
• Experience defining/documenting optimal target network architecture to ensure scalable and flexible core technologies.
• Experience evaluating/recommending new products and maintaining knowledge of emerging technologies for application to the enterprise.
• Strong familiarity with Network infrastructure including switching, routing, distribution datacenter technologies including virtualization, SAN storage and load balancers.
• Experience being a subject matter expert to provide strategic oversight and planning of enterprise network.
• Experience in capacity and performance management.
• Strong knowledge and experience with network services such as Active Directory, DNS, and DHCP.
• Ability to effectively integrate solutions into the existing infrastructure.
• Forward-looking, assertive, yet positive attitude.
• Candidate must demonstrate interest, ability and/or experience promoting cultural competency and/or diversity.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

• Demonstrated knowledge of network applications and application-layer protocols.
• Professional experience deploying and maintaining 802.11 wireless networking.
• Professional experience supporting networks in a multi-vendor environment.
• Professional experience with Juniper networking equipment and JunOS.
• Familiarity with VOIP and QOS.
• Ability to work collaboratively, cooperatively, and closely with technically adept and involved senior management.
• Experience in one or more of the following areas:
– Security protocols and services such as IPSec, firewalls, SSL, VPN, ACLs or filters
– Wireless services, such as LTE, point-to-point, or point-to-multipoint

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

• Understanding of business drivers and stakeholder requirements; understanding of documentation and architectural frameworks.
• Ability to develop engineering documentation, including functional requirements, specification documents, project plans, maps, and drawings, for a variety of audiences.
• Strong analytical problem solving skills.
• Ability to perform network troubleshooting to isolate and diagnose network problems.
• Understanding of industry best practices surrounding proper maintenance and support of a 24×7 network infrastructure.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills and interpersonal skills, especially related to complex IT topics and architecture design.
• Experience contacting vendors for technical solutions.
• Ability to create solutions and procedures for recurring problems.
• Ability to perform network modeling, analysis, and planning.
• Willingness and ability to work flexible hours, carry a cell phone, and rotate on-call.
• Demonstrated commitment to contribute to a safe work environment.

• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, color, and peripheral vision; depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
