Job Description Summary

Responsible for the performance of routine and special custodial duties in the Student Development Complex (SDC) and associated facilities and grounds as assigned. Work is performed in accordance with instructions and schedules provided, with results regularly inspected. Provide excellent customer service to a wide variety of internal and external customers. Follow instructions and perform work with a minimum amount of direct supervision.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

1. Clean and maintain locker rooms, rest rooms, hallways, lobbies, classrooms, labs, lounges, offices, gyms, racquetball courts, pool area, suites, stairwells and other public and work areas in the Student Development Complex as may be assigned.
2. Clean, sanitize and maintain sinks, toilets, shower stalls, fixtures, counters, mirrors, steps, windows, ceilings, walls and floors in the Student Development Complex as may be assigned.
3. Sweep, mop, clean, vacuum, strip, wax and buff various types of floor surfaces.
4. Clean all types of wall and ceiling surfaces.
5. Wash interior and exterior windows, dust, clean and move furniture, and clean offices.
6. Change light bulbs in various fixtures inside and outside of the SDC.
7. Replenish washroom soap, paper and vending products.
8. Operate all pieces of equipment pertaining to the SDC and MacInnes Ice Arena (i.e., riding floor machines, airlift, etc.). Use and maintain a variety of cleaning and maintenance machines, tools and equipment.
9. Maintain a clean, sanitary and safe work area and ensure a safe environment throughout the SDC. Remove garbage, paper and recycling.
10. Maintain building entrances according to conditions by removing snow and ice, applying sand and salt, and removing debris.
11. Assist in delivering, moving, setting up, and taking down equipment for on-site events, such as tables, chairs, and floor mats.
12. Participate in any training necessary to accommodate changes in operation which directly affects regular assigned duties.
13. Integrate safety practices into daily activities.
14. Functional supervision may be exercised over student assistants or other personnel as assigned.
15. Adhere to current uniform policy.
16. Assist customers with SDC policies and procedures.

Required Education (minimum requirements)

• High school diploma, or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

• Within the last three years, applicant must have one year continuous full-time experience with primary duties and position title as a custodian, or an equivalent combination of custodial experience equal to one year full-time within the last three years.

• One year experience maintaining a variety of floor surfaces using an auto-scrubber, burnisher, buffer, carpet extraction vacuum, or other commercial cleaning equipment.

• Demonstrated ability to perform general maintenance tasks, including changing light bulbs. The use of ladders will be required to perform some of these tasks.
• Demonstrated commitment to contribute to a clean and safe facility.
• Demonstrated ability to perform general maintenance tasks.
• Possess a valid driver’s license and meet Michigan Tech University’s vehicle use requirements.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty and staff.
