Job Description Summary

As part of its ongoing Strategic Faculty Hiring Initiative (SFHI) with a focus on Water, Michigan Technological University (Michigan Tech) is soliciting applications for a tenure-track position in large-scale hydrodynamic modeling, physical oceanography, or computational fluid dynamics.

This position complements four previous SFHI faculty hires and the newly-opened, multi-disciplinary Great Lakes Research Center (GLRC). The GLRC is a 50,000 sq. ft., $25M waterfront facility with state of the art laboratories, marine facilities, and a new super computer facility.

New faculty may be affiliated with any existing department at Michigan Tech; joint appointments will also be considered.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

1. Contribute to the teaching mission at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
2. Develop a vigorous, externally funded research program in large-scale hydrodynamic modeling, physical oceanography, or computational fluid dynamics.
3. Advise graduate student research at the M.S. and Ph.D. level and involve undergraduates in research.
4. Participation in department and university committees.

Required Education (minimum requirements)
Required Experience (minimum requirements)

A doctorate in a field related to physical oceanography, computational fluid dynamics, or large-scale hydrodynamic modeling must be in hand at the time of application.

Candidates must demonstrate prior success in obtaining, or evidence of potential to secure, external funding; and a commitment to excellence in undergraduate and graduate education.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

Post-doctoral experience is strongly preferred.
The ability to conduct field or laboratory measurements and experimentation in addition to modeling skills will be viewed positively.
Senior level candidates with exceptional records will also be considered.

In addition to pursuing and funding their own research foci, successful candidates will be able to contribute to interdisciplinary studies of the Great Lakes by implementing hydrodynamic models to study ecological and water quality phenomena.
