Job Description Summary

The person hired for this position will be required to operate a FEI Titan Themis (S)TEM and associated GIF and EDS for users from multiple disciplines across campus and external to campus. In addition to managing the laboratory, responsibilities will include assisting in the design of experiments utilizing imaging and spectroscopic functions as well as utilization of multiple in-situ holders. The person will be required to stimulate the use of equipment by educational outreach both on and off campus and investigate the inclusion of the scope capabilities in new research efforts. The successful candidate will have a working knowledge of the electron microscopy principles/physics and enthusiasm for multidisciplinary application of the (S)TEM and related spectroscopy techniques.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

1. Stimulate the application of transmission electron miscroscopy ((S)TEM and HREM) to research programs at Michigan Technological University and external users.
2. Provide expertise in and operation of an FEI Titan Themis (S)TEM equipped with EDS, GIF, and multiple in-situ Protochip and FEI stages in all imaging and diffraction modes. Collaborate with University researchers and industrial users to plan (S)TEM experiments and guide them in preparing and observing their samples.
3. Educate and supervise users in using the instrument and interpreting the data. Establish user policies and create documentation and instructions on microscope operation. Prepare instrumentation proposals and help teach and supervise graduate students in electron microscopy.

Required Education (minimum requirements)

• Master’s in Engineering or Physical Science.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

• 3 years operational experience with the same or similar equipment to FEI Themis Titan (S)TEM with EELS/EDS.
• Has authored or coauthored a technical publication/report including images obtained by (S)TEM.
• Has had at least 1 academic course where principles of (S)TEM were taught.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

• Research proposal development.
• Experience with training new users and facilities management.

• Knowledge of the operational physics of a (S)TEM, EELS and EDS system.
