Job Description Summary

Michigan Technological University’s Information Technology department is seeking applicants for an entry level system administrator position focused on advanced troubleshooting and support of our maintenance and deployment of Windows, Mac OS and Red Hat Enterprise Linux workstations on campus. This critical role will support our Operations workshop where student technicians are trained to support the campus technology needs.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

1. Analyze advanced troubleshooting requests, resolve them yourself, route correctly to senior system administration staff or train/support student technicians in resolving the issues.
2. Manage, train, and maintain a student technician workforce skilled in Windows, Linux and Mac OS workstation hardware, operating and software support.
3. Implement and document solutions on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS workstations and servers.
4. Perform regular maintenance tasks on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS workstations and servers.
5. Ensure data and system integrity.
6. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of advances in information technology systems.
7. Identify tasks which require automation and automate them.
8. Troubleshoot hardware and software problems, both on workstations and servers
9. Collaborate within IT to provide solutions in-line with established standards
10. Assist other IT staff as needed.
11. Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.
12. Integrate safety practices into daily activities.
13. Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.

Required Education (minimum requirements)

• Bachelor’s degree in system administration or a comparable technology related degree program; or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which required knowledge and abilities can be acquired.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

• Demonstrated expertise gained from experience with operating systems including Windows, Linux and/or Mac OS.
• Demonstrated expertise managing Windows, Linux, and/or Mac OS computers in a lab, corporate, or other professional environment.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

• Experience using compiling and deploying software in multiple operating systems
• Experience with Linux command line and scripting languages including but not limited to PowerShell, BASH, or Python
• Experience with Revision Control Systems (e.g., Bitbucket/Git)
• Experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux
• Experience with Configuration Management tools (e.g., Puppet, Chef, SCCM, CFEngine, etc)
• Relevant Microsoft, Red Hat, VMware certifications

• Most work is performed in a normal, temperature controlled office environment

About IT Operations:
Our group is responsible for identity management, storage, virtual machine infrastructure, Linux/Mac OS/Windows operating system management, application packaging/distribution, license servers, core services (DHCP/DNS/LDAP/Authentication Systems), application traffic management/load balancing, data center operations, printing infrastructure and much more.
Our 24+ full time staff and over 50 part-time student technicians are hardworking and creative problems solvers with a demanding amount of technical work to accomplish. That work is a balance of making sure our technology and skills stay at the leading edge while servicing our technical debt associated with legacy systems and previous technical mergers. The systems and services we run support the entirety of the faculty, staff, students, alumni and campus academic community.
