Public research institution Michigan Technological University is hiring a web developer/programmer for its digital services team.

The web developer/programmer will work within the University Marketing and Communications digital services team to maintain usability, customize functionality, participate in redesigns, and perform ongoing technical maintenance of websites across the mtu.edu domain and subdomains.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

1. Create and promote web-based applications and pages that are consistent with Michigan Tech’s integrated marketing/branding program.
2. Assess the technical parameters of a project and give feedback on viability and timing estimates.
3. Modify pre-existing code, create custom code, and work with API’s and open source while documenting work to industry standards.
4. Create custom modules for out-of-the-box CMS.
5. Prototype, test and debug projects and webpages.
6. Work with Digital Services team in reviewing Michigan Tech webpages for consistency, accuracy, accessibility, and compliance while ensuring future viability and continuous improvement.
7. Support an environment of team trust.
8. Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.
9. Apply safety‐related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.
DESIRED DUTIES:
Include the following, based on skills and abilities.
1. Provide CSS styles for custom modules for out-of-the-box CMS.
2. Manage front end design and fuctionality of Michigan Tech’s events calendar system.
3. Manage front end design and fuctionality of the University’s blog system.
4. Assist in providing consultation to the University community concerning web design and interfaces.
5. Ensure that web code follows industry standards and is in compliance for accessibility.
6. Attend standing meeting to continue an ongoing relationship with IT areas on campus.
7. Work closely with student web content specialists.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Functional supervision may be exercised over technical team members, student web programmers, and others involved in the development and maintenance of the Michigan Tech website.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Required Education (minimum requirements)

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, management information systems, or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

• One year of professional (post graduate) experience in web/web application programming and/or front end development.
• Expertise in one scripting language (ex: PHP, Java, Python, Perl, Ruby).
• Experience in using and interpreting web standards (browsers and validity).

Desirable Education and/or Experience

• Expertise in PHP.
• Experience with Ajax.
• Familiarity with SQL (MySQL, Oracle, etc).
• Advanced knowledge of HTML, Javascript, and CSS.
• Experience in WordPress management and development.
• Experience working in an academic environment.
• Demonstrated knowledge of CMS theory.
• Experience with OU Campus CMS.
• Demonstrated understanding of User Interface principles and User Experience.
• Experience in using and interpreting web accessibility standards.
• Experience with web design.
