Job Description Summary

As a Telecommunications Technician you will be pulling, installing, and terminating cable for the voice and data network infrastructure at Michigan Tech.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

1. Pull, install, and terminate Cat 6 cable.
2. Install cable pathways and raceways.
3. Utilize ladders of varying heights, basic hand tools and power tools.
4. Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
5. Learn basics between different types of cabling and termination methods.
6. Test installed cable infrastructure.
7. Troubleshoot existing cable infrastructure (Cat 3/5/6, 110 blocks, etc.).
8. Learn how to terminate/splice fiber optic cabling.
9. Other duties as assigned.
10. Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.
11. Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.

Required Education (minimum requirements)

• High School diploma
• Valid driver’s license

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

• 3-5 years cabling installation experience

Desirable Education and/or Experience

BICSI certification
• Familiarity with fiber splicing

• Most work is performed in the field (closets around campus). Position requires that most of the work day is spent: standing, walking, reaching outward, reaching above the shoulder, climbing, squatting or kneeling, and bending
• Occasional work is performed in an office situate at a desk
• Work involves constant interruptions and requirement to answer on demand questions by phone, in person or electronically
• Visual focus and strain
• Move up to 25 lbs and up to 50 lbs frequently
• Frequent repetitive hand/wrist motions and finger manipulation
• Work directly with students/clients
• Work requires visual distinction of colors, typically on small wires
