● Interested in the areas of science, research, engineering, and technology, as well as the people who work in those areas.
● Capable of editing content and occasionally writing for a variety of media, including magazines, newsletters, annual reports, web/blogs/social media, and the Michigan Tech news site (mtu.edu/news).
● Fast, accurate, and enthusiastic, with the ability to work well in a team environment.

1. Regularly edit, fact check, and proof copy for a variety of science/technical stories, as well as some general interest features, for publication in Michigan Tech Magazine, Research magazine, college/school/departmental newsletters and annual reports, the Michigan Tech news website, Tech Today (daily e-newsletter), and other websites, social media platforms, and print materials as required.

2. Review copy for errors in spelling, punctuation, and grammar, while ensuring that in-house style and brand guidelines are followed.

3. Mark up copy using traditional proofreader marks to indicate any needed changes or corrections.

4. Check revised proofs to ensure that all corrections/changes have been made.

5. Manage the in-house Editorial Guide and keep it up to date.

11. Manage workloads and expectations with others involved in each project.

12. Collaborate with multiple writers and give constructive, clear, and respectful feedback to improve individual pieces and overall writing.

13. Depending on experience and abilities, the copy editor may also perform other editorial duties as necessary.

14. Engage in at least one argument about the Oxford comma per academic year.

15. Encourage continuous improvement practices among employees.
