The Advancement Officer is responsible for cultivating and soliciting our alumni and friends for major and planned gifts of $25,000 and more. The Advancement officer duties will primarily involve meeting with potential university donors in a one on one setting to discuss their philanthropic vision and assisting donors to find the best match to direct their philanthropic funds.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

1. Cultivate, manage, and engage alumni in conversations regarding major and planned giving.
2. Utilizing researched data, contact and meet potential donors to determine their affinity to the University and their likelihood to provide philanthropic support to the University.
3. In collaboration with Advancement and Academic leadership, create individual cultivation and solicitation strategies for major and planned giving donor prospects.
4. Serve as a liaison to select academic departments to enhance giving opportunities within academic units across campus.
5. Collaborate with the Donor Relations Officer and University leadership to prepare written gift proposals.
6. Correspond and follow up with donors, alumni and friends regarding giving opportunities at Michigan Tech.
7. Recommend and partner with the Director of Stewardship to implement stewardship strategies for choice donors.
8. Work in partnership with other advancement officers, University faculty and staff, and Michigan Tech Fund staff.
9. Strategically establish personal performance metrics in consultation with Advancement leadership.
10. Attend and coordinate alumni events both on and off campus as needed.
11. Integrate safety practices into daily activities.
12. Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.

Required Education (minimum requirements)

• A bachelor’s degree from a four-year accredited institution.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

• At least 1 year of fundraising, admissions, banking, management, sales or equivalent experience is required (student employment experience counts).

Desirable Education and/or Experience

• Experience working in higher education.
• Knowledge of fundraising in a university advancement environment.
• Understanding of donor stewardship and alumni engagement.
• Knowledge of major and planned giving
• Experience with Michigan Tech culture.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

• Possess a valid driver’s license and meet Michigan Tech University’s vehicle use requirements.
• Willingness for frequent travel that may range between 25% and 75% of the position on any given month.
• Demonstrated exceptional interpersonal, oral, written skills with a strong service orientation.
• Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, coordinate, prioritize and direct multiple projects and activities with varied deadlines while multi-tasking in a fast paced travel environment.
• Demonstrated ability to be a strategic and innovative thinker and effective in moving projects/assignments along.
• A self-starter with strong organizational abilities, integrity and confidence.
• Team player with the ability to work in a cooperative/dynamic environment (e.g. with administrators, staff, faculty, and students) and external community environment (e.g. with business leaders, donors and volunteers).
• Ability to analyze and interpret data and make strategic business decisions.
• Ability to keep matters highly confidential and demonstrate honesty at all times.
• Must be highly proficient with the Microsoft software suite, including Word, Excel and Power Point.
• Demonstrated commitment to contribute to a safe work environment.
