Job Description Summary

Responsible for the performance of routine and special event preparation activities in the Memorial Union (MUB) and associated facilities and grounds as assigned. Work is performed in accordance with instructions and schedules provided, with results regularly inspected. Provide excellent customer service to a wide variety of internal and external customers.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

1. Set up audio-visual equipment, tables, chairs, stage, pipe and drape, and dance floor for meetings, conferences, banquets, and receptions according to written or verbal instructions. File a shift report at the end of your shift to inform staff of any maintenance or safety issues. Perform random room inspection audits
2. Assist in delivering, moving, setting up, and taking down equipment for off-site events, such as tents, grills, furniture, and food service equipment.
3. Assist patrons in a variety of customer service areas including providing directions and information about the Memorial Union.
4. Provide assistance with the detailed planning and preparation of future meeting/event set-up configurations which include mapping the event layout and supplying insight on room capacities.
5. Wash, dry and fold overnight guest room linens. Do daily housekeeping service in occupied guest rooms, and clean and prepare rooms for the next guest after occupancy. Assist guest room customers with check in, room location, and directions for parking. Clean and maintain all meeting and conference rooms, hallways, lobbies, lounges, restrooms, offices, stairwells and other work areas. Sweep, mop, vacuum, wax and buff various types of floor surfaces.
6. Clean washroom floors, ceiling surfaces, walls, and fixtures. Replenish washroom soap, paper and vending products. Maintain a clean, sanitary, safe work environment throughout the facility. Remove garbage and recycling.
7. Use and maintain a variety of cleaning and maintenance machines, tools and equipment. Wash windows, clean furniture, dust windowsills and ledges and clean fixtures.
8. Maintain building entrances according to conditions by removing snow and ice, applying sand and salt, and removing debris. Adhere to current uniform policy.
9. Participate in any training necessary to accommodate changes in operation which directly affects regularly assigned duties. Integrate safety practices into daily activities.

Required Education (minimum requirements)

• High school diploma, or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

• One year full-time experience with primary duties/position title as a custodian, or an equivalent combination of experience to equal one-year full-time, within the last 3 years.

• Demonstrated ability to set up furniture for, large banquets, conferences, and meetings.

• Demonstrated ability to work harmoniously with clients, students and staff in varying situations and in all areas when assigned.
• Demonstrated ability to maintain a clean and safe facility. Demonstrated ability to perform general maintenance tasks. Possession of a valid driver’s license with 5 points or less.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty and staff.
• Demonstrated commitment to contribute to a safe work environment.

Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of problems in standardized situations. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written or oral form.
