Job Description Summary

Michigan Technological University (Michigan Tech) seeks an experienced and enthusiastic Assistant Director to join the International Programs & Services (IPS) office. More specifically, we are looking for a vibrant and people-centric personality to complement our creative and close-knit team. Perfect for the professional craving the opportunity to impact change, the responsibilities for this position are largely variable based on the ideal candidate’s strengths and experiences. At a minimum, our dream Assistant Director is passionate about international education and would lead IPS in fostering an inclusive and supportive international student life experience at Michigan Tech.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

1. The essential duties and responsibilities for this position are largely variable based on the ideal candidate’s strengths and experiences.
Responsibilities may include:
• Development of new programming initiatives
• F/J advising
• Campus internationalization
• Collaborative oversight of our study abroad portfolio
2. Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and apply them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.
3. Must apply safety‐related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.
4. Supervisory Responsibilities: Functional supervision may be exercised over staff and/or students.

Required Education (minimum requirements)

• Bachelor’s degree

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

• Minimum three years in higher education administration
• Demonstrated supervisory and student advising experience

Desirable Education and/or Experience

• Master’s degree in International Education, Higher Education, or other relevant discipline
• Experience working, living, and/or studying abroad

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

• Demonstrated knowledge of F/J regulations as an active Designated School Official (DSO)/Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO)
• Strong project management skills, including the ability to work collaboratively and independently in a professional setting
• Demonstrated ability to propose, develop, implement, and execute original programming or systematic improvement initiatives
• Excellent writing, editing, and speaking skills; comfort in presenting before a large audience
• Commitment to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work, and willingness to engage in University continuous improvement initiatives
• Demonstrated commitment to contribute to a safe work environment
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

• Advanced knowledge of and demonstrated experience with F/J student advising
• Advanced understanding of the Student Exchange and Visitor Information System (SEVIS), including use, maintenance, functionality, and reporting requirements
• Fluency or advanced proficiency in a language other than English
• Demonstrated contributions to the field of international education and/or progressive leadership development within Higher Education
