Job Description Summary

Under the direction of the Associate Director of Industry Relations, the Assistant Director of Industry Relations partners with other personnel with Innovation and Industry Engagement and across the University to enhance and expand engagement of industry on campus through securing private funding from corporations in support of University priorities and programs. In particular, the Assistant Director of Industry Relations will work closely with individuals and groups throughout University to build deep relationships and connect University priorities with the interests of corporations, leading to successful recruitment of funding through gifts, sponsored research, gifts-in-kind and other forms of support for campus programs.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Portfolio Management
1. Develops and manages a portfolio of company relationships and funding opportunities, with a documented solicitation strategy for each opportunity in the portfolio.
2. Develops and implements strategies for engaging corporations in broad-based relationships with University.
3. Conducts solicitations for programs/projects of significant value by developing proposals with prospects, through all forms of communication including face-to-face solicitations when appropriate.
4. Writes proposals and reviews, edits, and rewrites, when necessary, proposal content generated by faculty and other campus stakeholders. Writes standard proposal attachments for Industry Relations unit proposals, and copy-edits and supports proposals from senior Industry Relations staff.
5. Coordinates compilation and submission of proposal packages, maintains relationships with prospects through phone and email, and organizes site visits for donors and prospects.
6. The Assistant Director will work in tandem with the Associate Director of Industry Relations to support management of an overall portfolio of accounts such as described above. Although the Director will have final clearance regarding the assignment of corporate prospects/opportunities, the Assistant Director will have ultimate responsibility for their own set of prospects/opportunities to be managed within a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) System.
7. The Assistant Director may travel with some frequency to meet/interact with corporate prospects for the purpose of identifying, cultivating, and closing fundraising. The Assistant Director will often represent the University on his/her own, but will also coordinate some travel with the President, Vice-Presidents, Deans, Chairs, and faculty. Travel will be scheduled at his/her discretion for the purpose of effective, coordinated and efficient cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.
8. Develop and implement stewardship plans unique to each company and/or funding program.

Prospect Research
1. Conducts prospect research to identify new prospective funding partners and to track new funding programs and initiatives of managed portfolio prospects
2. Identifies new opportunities and potential funders that match faculty investigators with the interests of corporate partners’ research and giving priorities.
3. Alerts administrators and faculty to opportunities by writing announcements for academic leadership distribution and for populating Innovation and Industry Engagement website/communications.
4. Meets with department chairs, research group leaders, individual faculty and program directors to stay informed of current program interests and institutional priorities.
5. Assists in organizing and presenting at appropriate workshops for industry/corporate relations officers, faculty and administrators on prospect identification, proposal writing, and other corporate relations services.

Internal and External Reporting
1. Clear documentation of contact engagement using a CRM system (Salesforce.com)
2. Monitors and implements necessary reporting and stewardship for opportunities within corresponding portfolio.
3. Prepares interim and final project reports as requested, in consultation with the principal investigator.
4. Coordinate with University Marketing & Communication to develop press releases and Blog entries to highlight corporate activity.
5. Communicate with other representatives of the University that interface with corporations.

Required Education (minimum requirements)

• Bachelor’s degree in business administration, public relations, engineering, science, or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

• Three years’ experience in fundraising, sales, and/or program development
• Experience using personal computers and basic software packages
• Experience using advanced features of word processing and spreadsheet/database software

Desirable Education and/or Experience

• Master’s degree in business administration, public relations, engineering, science, or related field
• Experience in higher education or technical industry related field
• Demonstrated experience with formal proposals and presentations to external audiences

• Ability to facilitate team efforts in meeting deadlines and goals; ability to build relationships to achieve desired outcomes in accordance with goals of the position
• Demonstrated experience making presentations to individuals and organizations
• Demonstrated experience writing proposals suitable for corporate clients
• Demonstrated ability to use judgment when dealing with confidential information
• Demonstrated experience and capability in dealing person-to-person with corporate managers and executives in development of joint programs
• Demonstrated ability to explain and convey complex information
• Demonstrated ability to understand financial data and budgets
• Demonstrated ability to effectively present information in one-on-one situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization
• Demonstrated ability to write quality reports and correspondence
• Demonstrated ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions
• Demonstrated ability and willingness to travel approximately 5 days per month
• Experience managing travel expenses and travel budget
• Ability to work to the demands of the position which may exceed a 40 hour work week including evening and weekend activities to support position duties and responsibilities
• Possession of a valid driver’s license and demonstrated ability to comply with Michigan Tech vehicle-use requirements
