Job Description Summary

MTRI is seeking a highly motivated, intellectually curious professional interested in conducting cutting edge research in signal processing, data science and remote sensing, and in developing an externally supported research portfolio. This individual will help lead and/or support multiple projects for our government and commercial customers, and will work with senior engineers and scientists to research, develop and evaluate algorithms for a variety of signal and image processing, and geospatial applications. This person may also support numerical analysis and simulation on projects involving a variety of sensor phenomena. The successful candidate will have a solid background in applied mathematics, statistics, signal processing, and machine learning. The ideal candidate would have experience writing scientific software and applying such software tools to solve real world problems.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

1. Participate as an integral team member on multi-disciplinary research developing technological solutions to governmental and societal needs and problems.
2. Provide technical, analytical and numerical support for research and development projects in the areas of mathematics, statistics, programming, electrical engineering, and signal processing.
3. Derive, implement and evaluate signal and data processing algorithms.
4. Develop prototype software and evaluate performance on data.
4. Contribute technical expertise to symposia, journal articles, and technical reports.
5. Prepare and deliver reports or presentations of research projects/analysis results to project sponsors as appropriate.
6 Contribute to the generation of proposals and external funding.
7. Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.

Supervisory Responsibilities – Supervision will be exercised over student interns on a project-by-project basis.

Required Education (minimum requirements)

PhD degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science, electrical engineering, or a similar related field, and 3 years related research experience either as part of degree program or post-degree.

OR

Master’s degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science, electrical engineering, or a similar related field, and 5 years related research experience either as part of degree program or post-degree.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

• Experience in signal processing, algorithm development, and statistical analysis using advanced mathematical concepts. .
• Experience implementing mathematical algorithms in prototype software, such as MatLab, Python, or R.
• Experience with the systematic evaluation of signal/data processing algorithms. Experience evaluating the performance of algorithms on simulated and/or measured data.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

• Experience with machine learning algorithms, and their application to remote sensing problems.
• Experience with the development and application of detection and classification algorithms.
• Experience with the development and application of radar and EO imaging algorithms.
• Experience with modeling and simulation tools, including MatLab.
• Experience leading the development of new proposals for external funding.
• Experience managing projects and leading technical teams.
• Experience with high-dimensional optimization, Bayesian inference, Inverse problem technique development.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

• Ability to obtain a Department of Defense security clearance, which requires United States citizenship. May not possess dual citizenship.
