The front-end developer will work within University Marketing and Communications to maintain and enhance front-end usability, customize functionality, and perform ongoing maintenance of Michigan Tech websites and related web marketing initiatives.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

1. Create and promote visually appealing web pages and interfaces that are consistent with Michigan Tech’s integrated marketing/branding program.
2. Assess the technical parameters of a project and give feedback on viability and timing estimates.
3. Modify pre-existing code, create custom code, and work with API’s and open source while documenting work to industry standards.
4. Provide styles for custom modules for out-of-the-box CMS.
5. Prototype, test, and debug projects and web pages.
6. Work with Digital Services team in reviewing Michigan Tech web pages for consistency, accuracy, and compliance.
7. Assist in providing consultation to the University community concerning web design and interfaces.
8. Collaborate with Digital Services team on daily and weekly communication vehicles for viability and continuous improvement of the CMS and web applications.
9. Ensure that web code follows industry standards and is in compliance for accessibility.
10. Attend standing meeting to continue an ongoing relationship with IT areas on campus.
11. Assist in managing Michigan Tech’s events calendar system.
12. Support an environment of team trust.
13. Functional supervision may be exercised over student web content specialists and others involved in the development and maintenance of the Michigan Tech website.
14. Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.
15. Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.

Required Education (minimum requirements)

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

• Three years’ experience in front end development.
• Expertise in HTML, CSS, and Javascript.
• Expertise in using and interpreting web standards (browsers, accessibility, and validity).
• Demonstrated working knowledge in using Adobe Photoshop and/or similar programs.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

• Experience with AJAX, jQuery.
• Demonstrated understanding of User Interface principles and User Experience.
• Experience in WordPress development.
• Experience with ARIA and other web accessibility coding practices.
• Experience working in an academic environment.
• Experience with web design.
• Experience with Google Analytics.
• Demonstrated knowledge of PHP.
• Demonstrated knowledge of CMS theory.
• Familiarity with SQL (MySQL, Oracle, etc).
• Experience with Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

The work environment is that of a typical office and/or classroom setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
