Job Description Summary

This position serves as an advocate and technical resource for Michigan’s local (city, village, county) transportation agencies. The position will provide engineering technical support for activities underway at the Center for Technology & Training, which includes work with the Michigan Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP), the Great Lakes Environmental Infrastructure Center (GLEIC), The Bridge Load Rating Program and support for the Roadsoft asset management software package, and other research projects. The position requires a strong background in transportation engineering (roads and bridges) as well as knowledge of the relationship between Michigan’s road owning agencies at a state and local level.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

1. Organize, coordinate, facilitate and/or lead continuing education and outreach workshops, conferences, webinars and other training events at a variety of locations throughout Michigan.
2. Participate in research related activities awarded to the Center for Technology & Training (CTT) in conjunction with other staff and faculty, including proposal writing, conducting research, planning and management of research projects, report preparation, and presentation of findings on an as needed basis.
3. Provide engineering technical assistance to Michigan’s local agencies on transportation related issues on an as needed basis.
4. Create, design, and present transportation related training materials at workshops and conferences throughout Michigan and nationally with a specific focus on asset management/pavement management.
5. Provide technical expertise for engineering related software development projects.
6. Deliver program-related presentations to program clients and related professional organizations
7. Participate on committees, councils, and task forces of related public and private entities.
8. Integrate safety practices into daily activities.
9. Encourage continuous improvement practices among employees. Commit to applying continuous improvement strategies to strategic goals and leadership skills.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Functional supervision may be exercised over support staff and student assistants.

Required Education (minimum requirements)

• Bachelor’s degree from ABET accredited college in civil engineering or environmental engineering, with strong background in transportation projects.
• Michigan Professional Engineer License or ability to secure one through reciprocity.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

• A minimum of four years of engineering experience, with three years of experience with design, construction or planning of transportation projects.
• Track record of project experience at the county, city, or state level.
• Four years of experience using personal computers and basic software packages.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

• Advanced degree.
• Experience developing and presenting training material for adult audiences.
• Experience in writing technical research reports.
• Experience with pavement management systems and/or pavement deterioration modeling.
• Experience with cost estimating for transportation projects.
• Experience in project management.
• Experience with water and sewer infrastructure projects.
• Experience conducting bridge load ratings

The Center for Technology & Training (CTT) provides technology transfer, software development and research services to support agencies that manage public infrastructure. With annual funding from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and Michigan Technological University (MTU), the CTT administers Michigan’s Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) and manages the development and support of software for roadway asset management, project estimating, and project management.
