Job Description Summary

The Department Chair will lead the Chemical Engineering faculty in their mission of excellence in education, research and service. We seek an individual with the vision and experience to elevate the department’s prominence in chemical engineering research, further our strong tradition of educational excellence, and grow our M.S. and Ph.D. programs.

The Chair is the chief administrative officer of the department and is responsible for the department’s administration, hiring, promotion and budget as well as being the leader in continuously improving the culture of safety, inclusion, and excellence in teaching and research. The Chair serves as the primary liaison between the department and the rest of the University and external constituents, and is expected to foster collaborations both internal and external to the university that advance the department’s mission.

The Chemical Engineering Department consists of 15 full-time faculty members, 7 full-time staff, and a number of research personnel (post-docs, etc.). The department offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Chemical Engineering and has strong research and educational programs in sustainability, process design, minerals processing, thermodynamics, physicochemical properties, polymer processing, rheology, carbon-polymer composites, biomaterials, bioprocessing, bioengineering, medical microdevices, and chemical process safety.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

1. Serve as chief administrative officer of the department with responsibility for all aspects of the educational, research, and service activities within the department.
2. Provide strong leadership for excellence in teaching, service, and research while promoting a culture of safety and inclusion.
3. Effectively engage the department and other stakeholders in executing the department’s vision and strategic plan, ensuring alignment of the department’s vision, plan, and goals with those of the College and University.
4. Manage the department’s finances responsibly and strategically to achieve short­ and long­term goals.
5. Recruit, develop, and retain an outstanding and diverse faculty; support faculty in research and educational endeavors; and guide the mentorship of junior faculty.
6. Increase the recruitment and retention of a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.
7. Supervise department faculty and staff; conduct progress reviews of untenured faculty and make recommendations on reappointment, tenure, and promotion cases; conduct performance reviews of all department faculty.
8. Increase funding for the department through individual and collaborative efforts and by leveraging existing resources.
9. Establish relationships with alumni, academic, industry, and government groups to promote the goals of the department in academics and research and their funding.
10. Contribute to University advancement activities by reaching out to prospective donors, leading stewardship activities for current donors, and, as appropriate leveraging department resources in support of growth of total resources available to support the department.
11. Serve as department spokesperson and advocate within the university and with external constituents; actively promote the success of the department’s students, faculty, and staff.
12. Oversee and ensure quality of ABET and university assessment activities.
13. Provide leadership for activities to improve the quality of the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degree programs.
14. Identify safety-related knowledge, skills, abilities, and training needed for positions within the department and opportunities for continuous learning and improvement of safety.
15. Encourage continuous improvement practices among employees. Commit to applying continuous improvement strategies to strategic goals and leadership skills.
16. Other duties as assigned.

Required Education (minimum requirements)

• An earned Ph.D. degree in chemical engineering, or a closely related field

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

• Demonstrated leadership experience in an academic, government or industrial setting
• Experience in fostering productive, interdisciplinary relationships in an academic, government or industrial community

Desirable Education and/or Experience

• Experience in working with engineering programs at the university level
• Experience in supervising professional staff
• A distinguished record of scholarly activities
• Experience in fostering a flexible and inclusive work environment
• Experience in generating resources through fundraising
